Melbourne City FC signs FIFA esports player

Melbourne City FC is the first club in Australia to sign a player for the digital soccer pitch.

The club has announced that 20-year-old Melbournite and FIFA fanatic Marcus Gomes will be its first esports representative, and that his first outing in the team's colours will be in London this week at the FIFA Interactive World Cup Grand Final.

The final runs from August 16-18, and Gomes is the only Australian player among its 32 finalists.

Gomes' FIFA 17 form puts him in the top 32 players in the world. He had more FIFA 17 FUT Champions Weekend League wins this year than any other PlayStation 4 player in the Rest of World region.

Six ANZ games selected for PAX Aus Indie Showcase

A pair of Kiwi titles and four from Australia have been selected for display at PAX Australia.

Kiwi arena brawler Grabity and FPS Sky Noon will be showcased at the popular expo, which runs from October 27-29 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in Australia.

When discussing Grabity's creation with us last month, Team Ninja Thumbs' Moritz Schlitter called it "Super Smash Bros. with Half-Life gravity guns".

Johnny Depp is producing a TV series based on The Secret World

Johnny Depp’s film company Infinitum Nihil is producing a TV series based on Funcom's spooky MMO-turned-action RPG The Secret World.

The series will centre on a team of undercover agents and the shadowy war between secret societies, the Illuminati, Dragon and the Templar. Central to the plot is also the battle against the supernatural in an adventure that spans across our world, multiple dimensions, and incorporates the realms of ancient myths and legends as well as today’s conspiracy theories and headline news.

The pilot was written by James V. Hart (Hook, Dracula, Contact) and Jake Hart.

Gamer chat app Discord removes alt-right server, targets white supremacists

Gamer voice and text chat app company Discord is shutting down servers and accounts associated with the neo-nazi events in Charlottesville, Virginia this past weekend.

The company announced today on Twitter that it has already shut down altright.com – a large server notorious for its hateful content – and banned a number of its members.

Discord CEO Jason Citron told Polygon the company will continue to pursue investigate servers that violate Discord’s terms of service and promote hateful content or incite violence.

Major No Man's Sky update adds new story and multiplayer

A new update to No Man's Sky has added in a new 30 hour campaign and rudimentary multiplayer, among other things.

Dubbed Atlas Rises, it is the third major update to the freeform exploration title since it launched a year ago, and the biggest addition so far.

The new central storyline is a branching narrative that allows players to discover more about the universe "and themselves". The fabric of existence is starting to falter, a mysterious new interdimensional race have appeared, and ancient portals have begun to open.

Never say never: Overwatch is getting deathmatch modes

Despite Blizzard's prior claims that it would never happen, Overwatch is getting deathmatch modes.

The modes will use modified versions of existing maps already in the game, as well as a brand new one called Chateau Guillard, the former home of Widowmaker.

The mode is already available in Overwatch’s Public Test Region on PC, where you can play eight player Deathmatch that is first to 20 kills, or six-on-six Team Deathmatch that is first team to 30.

Multi-billionaire sports entrepreneur buys Overwatch League team

New teams from London and Los Angeles and have joined Blizzard's ambitious Overwatch League, a global affair that will pit city-based teams against one another.

The new arrivals join teams already confirmed from Boston, Los Angeles, Miami-Orlando, New York, San Francisco, Seoul, and Shanghai.

Esports organisation Cloud9 founder Jack Etienne purchased the rights to the London team, while billionaire sports team owner Stan Kroenke and his son Josh purchased the rights to a Los Angeles team – the league's second.

Those speaking at the New Zealand Game Developers Conference this year include industry veterans from Ubisoft Montreal, Weta Workshop, and Mafia III studio Hangar 13.

Ubisoft Montreal gameplay programmer Aurelie Le Chevalier – who has worked 0n Rainbow Six, Child of Light, Shape Up, and For Honor – will deliver the conference's opening keynote.

A speaker hailing from much closer to home is Weta Workshop concept artist Paul Tobin, who has worked on a large number of blockbuster films, as well as Monolith's Shadow of Mordor. He is also the co-creator of Weta Workshop's tabletop title Giant Killer Robots, the creator of White Cloud Worlds, and creative director of Industry of Imagination.

Fig's first crowdfunded game pays backers twice their investment in a fortnight

The first game crowdfunded on Fig has generated a tidy return for backers in just two weeks on the market.

Kingdoms and Castles by Lion Shield has already earned a 100 percent return for its backers, and it's possible they will continue to see returns from the game for the next three years.

The medieval city builder generated US$1m in sales during its first two weeks, and earned enough money in 48 hours to cover initial investments, which took place back in January.
